For those of you who have ever done a little business in Russia, you will understand the differences between the West and the East. A friend of mine, an intrepid Polish traveler, informs me that a good hotel in Germany for example, will be expensive and yet more often than not the levels of service and comfort will be commensurate with the price. There will be rules you must adhere to, with the general idea being that life works better if we everyone stays within the lines of propriety and does the right thing. My friend’s experiences with Russian hotels were somewhat different. He found himself in the outskirts of Moscow recently in a room he deemed to be abnormally cold. The radiator was broken and when he informed the night manager, their conversation went like this:
